Pathways between Climate, Fish, Fisheries, and Management: A Conceptual Integrated Ecosystem Management Approach

چکیده

The abundance and distribution of marine fishes is influenced by environmental conditions, predator–prey relationships, multispecies interactions, direct human impacts, such as fishing. adaptive response the system depends on its structure pathways that link factors to taxon in question. “Star Diagram” a socio-ecological model ecosystems depicts general between climate, fish, fisheries, their intersection with climate policy resource management. We illustrate use identifying key factors, drivers influence walleye pollock, crab, sockeye salmon, under warming scenario eastern Bering Sea shelf. This approach predicts all three species will see reduced populations long-term scenario. Going forward, challenge managers balance magnitude effect harvest adaptability management system, scale degree resilience behavioral, physiological, or evolutionary adaptation ecosystem constituents. Star Diagram provides novel conceptual construct can visualize integrate various aspects into holistic, framework.

An Integrated Approach Is Needed for Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management: Insights from Ecosystem-Level Management Strategy Evaluation

An ecosystem approach is widely seen as a desirable goal for fisheries management but there is little consensus on what strategies or measures are needed to achieve it. Management strategy evaluation (MSE) is a tool that has been widely used to develop and test single species fisheries management strategies and is now being extended to support ecosystem based fisheries management (EBFM). We des...

Challenges for Implementing an Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management

The ecosystem approach is being promoted as the foundation of solutions to the unsustainability of fisheries. However, because the ecosystem approach is broadly inclusive, the science for its implementation is often considered to be overly complex and difficult. When the science needed for an ecosystem approach to fisheries is perceived this way, science products cannot keep pace with fisheries...

Climate Change and Ecosystem Management

This article addresses the implications of rapid and uncertain ecological change, and global climate change in particular, for reserve oriented and restoration oriented ecosystem management. I argue for the following conclusions: (1) rapid and uncertain ecological change undermines traditional justifications for reserve oriented and restoration oriented ecosystem management strategies; (2) it r...
